I commenced my teaching career in 1982 in a P-10 school – then called Normanton State School and Secondary Department, where I had attended primary school and had worked as a Teacher’s Aide while I completed senior through the Secondary Correspondence School (now called Brisbane School of Distance Education). From there I taught at the Isis District State High School (Childers), Mirani SHS (HOD – English, Japanese and Media) and Sarina SHS (Deputy Principal). For the past eighteen years I have been the Principal of the Calen District State College and I love the seamless nature and family atmosphere of a P-10/12 school. I enjoy mentoring others and seeing them develop their leadership capabilities. I am passionate about the P-12 ethos, all aspects of the English curriculum, senior schooling pathways and having spent all of my teaching career in rural locations, I am particularly interested in rural and remote education – research, celebrating the initiatives which have been developed by teachers to overcome the tyrannies of isolation and distance and providing rural students with opportunities which are taken for granted in urban settings. I am undertaking research for my Doctor of Education degree through Central Queensland University and the focus of my research is principals’ conceptions of success in rural P-12 schools.

It is my pleasure to be the State President of this wonderful organisation and I look forward to visiting your school and working with you.

There are over 1,043 students in the Junior School alone. I have worked in Education Queensland for over thirty years and I am a passionate supporter of P-10 and P-12 schools. My role as Vice-President (Conferences) gives me the opportunity to work with administrators from across the state as a member of the planning committee for the Combined P-10/12 – QASSP State Conference. My role within this team ensures that conference speakers and workshops have relevance to administrators in P-10/12 settings. Prior to taking up my position at Calamvale, I was Deputy Principal at a small school of 300 students. My experience at both sites gives me a great perspective as I advocate for P-10/12 schools.

I am currently the Principal of Alpha State School (P-10) and have held this position since the beginning of 2015. Although I have worked with Education Queensland for over 17 in a variety of primary schools, Alpha is my first P-10 experience and I love the tight knit community and rural lifestyle. I commenced my career as a Music Specialist in a cluster of schools in the Innisfail region but my passion for classroom teaching became evident. Two excellent Principal mentors inspired me to consider moving into administration and in 2007 I obtained my first principalship. After having been a small school principal at Cooyar and Collinsville, I became Deputy Principal at Harristown State School in Toowoomba. However my desire to return to the country and experience the challenges of a P-10 school, led me to Alpha. My experiences have provided me with the opportunity to understand rural and remote communities across Queensland. I am delighted to be a part of the Queensland State P-10/12 School Administrators’ Association’s Executive Council and if I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate in contacting me.

I began my teaching career at Woodridge SHS in Logan in 1997. I loved my first 7 years of teaching at this vibrant, multicultural school. A Social Science HOD opportunity enticed me to move to Mackay SHS for a couple of years before moving back to the south-east corner. The natural beauty, enviable lifestyle and colleaguality of the Central Queensland region are some of my fondest memories of my time in Mackay. Back in the south-east corner I broadened my professional experience to a HOD of English role and Acting Deputy Principal periods at Windaroo Valley SHS before moving to a South East Regional Office as a PEO for School Improvement. I enjoyed and was challenged by 5 years as this PEO, before returning to Woodridge SHS as Head of School for its Intensive English School in 2013. This promotional position offered me a unique opportunity to work with EALD learners from refugee, asylum seeking and migrant experiences. What a learning curve and humbling experience! At the beginning of 2017, my next professional challenge awaited as I began the year as Principal at Baralaba SS (P-10) – a small, rural school in Central Queensland. This region’s beauty and lifestyle proved to be very enticing and I have enjoyed the opportunity to be professionally challenged once again. I am delighted to be a part of the Queensland State P-10/12 School Administrators’ Association and look forward to working more closely with many of my new colleagues in this region. Please contact me if needed.
